THE BATTLE THAT CHANGED HISTORY

Dr Simon Lee, Senior Tutor in the history of art at Reading University, tells of his sensational discovery of a painting of Napoleon.

In the second half, an entertainment of words and music has been devised for the occasion - music by Haydn, Stanford, and poems by Wordsworth, Byron, Southey, Shelley and Thomas Hood. SUSAN LEGG mezzo-soprano, ANDREW MACKENZIE-WICKS tenor and TERENCE ALLBRIGHT piano

LECTURE-RECITAL BY NEIL JENKINS

A portrait in words and music of John Beard, the leading 18thC tenor who sang in most of Handel's oratorios and was a favourite of David Garrick. There will also be an opportunity to purchase signed copies of Neil Jenkins' book on John Beard.

BOOK LAUNCH EVENT

The long-awaited book by Peter Thorogood, The Phoenix of Drury Lane, will be launched at St Mary's House.

"The Theatre Royal, Drury Lane: the fire of 1809 and its literary consequences in the writings of Lord Byron and others."

In the presence of the High Sheriff of East Sussex, Mrs Juliet Smith.

A fully staged and costumed Christmas entertainment, 'The Night Before Christmas', with a selection of popular arias, songs and Christmas carols. Catriona Clark (soprano), Laura Kelly (mezzo-soprano), Nicholas Ransley (tenor), Richard Suart (baritone), David Stephenson (baritone), accompanied by Bryan Evans (music director and piano).
